How to Calculate Your Meal Macros Using ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude

Tracking your macros — protein, carbs, fat, and total calories — is one of the most powerful tools for managing body composition, energy, and long-term health. But weighing every ingredient isn't always practical.

Modern AI assistants with vision capabilities (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude) can analyze all your meal photos from the day, keep them in the same chat, and sum your daily macros. This guide walks you through exactly how to do it for each platform, then shows you how to enter only the end-of-day totals into OMNI Nutrition.

The 5-Step Process

Take a clear photo of every meal during the day
Use your phone camera in good lighting and capture each full plate from above. Do this for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and calorie-containing drinks. If portions are hard to judge, place a fork or a coin next to the food for scale.

Open a daily chat in your preferred AI app
Use one chat for the whole day. You can start in the morning and return to the same chat each time you eat to add the next photo. This lets the AI sum everything correctly at the end.

Add each photo to the same chat and use the prompt below
Tap the image/attachment icon, attach each meal photo, and ask the AI to keep it as part of the day total. Be specific about portion size if you know it (e.g., "this is a 200 g chicken breast").

Review each meal and correct it during the day
The AI should list the foods and macros for each photo. Check the numbers against your real portion size. If something looks off, tell the AI (e.g., "the potato was about the size of my fist") before adding the next meal.

At the end of the day, log the totals in OMNI Nutrition
After you have added all the photos for the day, ask the AI to sum the macros from every meal and give you one daily total. Then open OMNI -> Nutrition and log only those total calories, protein, carbs, and fat.

Step-by-Step for Each AI App

Select the app you use:

ChatGPT (iOS, Android, Web)

  1. Open the ChatGPT app (or chat.openai.com on desktop).
  2. Start a new chat for the day. Tap the paperclip / image icon in the message bar.
  3. Select "Choose Photo" and pick the photo of your first meal.
  4. In the same message, paste the prompt below and tap Send. Return to the same chat to add each later meal.
  5. At the end of the day, ask: "Sum all meals in this chat and give me the daily total for calories, protein, carbs, and fat."

  1. Open Google Gemini (gemini.google.com, or the Gemini app on mobile).
  2. Tap the image icon (camera/gallery) at the bottom of the chat input.
  3. Choose your first meal photo from your gallery or take a new one.
  4. Paste the prompt below in the text field and tap Send. Keep the same chat open to add the rest of the day's meals.
  5. On Android you can also share photos directly from Google Photos to Gemini using the share sheet.

Claude (iOS, Android, Web)

  1. Open Claude (claude.ai, or the Claude app on mobile).
  2. Start a new conversation. Tap the paperclip icon to attach a file or image.
  3. Select your first meal photo. It will appear as a preview in the input bar.
  4. Add the prompt below and hit Send. Use the same chat for the rest of the day's photos.
  5. Claude is particularly good at reasoning about portion size. At the end of the day, ask it to sum every photo in the chat.

Ask the AI for the day total
After you have added breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and calorie-containing drinks, write "day total" and ask it to sum every photo in the chat.

Open OMNI -> Nutrition at the end of the day
Navigate to the Nutrition section from the main dashboard or the bottom nav on mobile once you have the daily total.

Enter only the daily macro total
Fill in Calories, Protein (g), Carbohydrates (g), and Fat (g) using the DAY TOTAL row from the AI output. You can use a description like "AI-estimated daily total".

Save and review your trends
OMNI will add that total to your day and update your macro progress bars. You can review your weekly trends on the Nutrition dashboard.
✅ Tips for More Accurate Results
  • Better lighting = better estimates. Natural daylight or a bright kitchen light makes food easier to identify.
  • Top-down + side angles. If possible, take a second photo from the side so the AI can gauge the height/volume of the portions.
  • Name the foods yourself. Start your prompt with "This plate has grilled salmon, quinoa, and asparagus" — it anchors the AI and reduces misidentification.
  • State known weights. If you weighed your protein or carb source, include it: "the salmon was 150 g."
  • Ask for a confidence rating. Add "Rate your confidence in each estimate (High/Medium/Low)" to identify items worth double-checking.
  • Use the same AI consistently. Each model has slightly different calibrations. Picking one and sticking to it makes your data more comparable week over week.
⚠️ Know the Limitations

AI vision estimates are not a substitute for a food scale. Accuracy is typically within ±15-25% depending on how mixed or layered the dish is.
